Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a first-person shooter video game released in 2024, co-developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, and published by Activision. It’s the twenty-first game in the Call of Duty series and the seventh main entry in the Black Ops sub-series, following Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War from 2020. The single-player story is set during Operation Desert Storm and follows rogue CIA operatives Troy Marshall and Frank Woods as they build a team to take down Pantheon, a paramilitary group with secret ties to the CIA.

The game includes a single-player campaign, a multiplayer component, and a cooperative round-based Zombies mode. All three modes feature a new omnidirectional movement system, letting players sprint, dive, and slide in any direction. Black Ops 6 had a four-year development cycle, the longest in the Call of Duty series. Marketing kicked off in May 2024 with live-action teaser trailers and fictional ads on the front pages of newspapers. The full reveal came after the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase on June 9. The game launched on October 25, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Upon release, Black Ops 6 got generally positive reviews, had the biggest launch weekend in the franchise’s history, and earned several award nominations. Critics praised all three modes, especially the new omnidirectional movement system. A sequel, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, is set to release on November 14, 2025.

Gameplay

Black Ops 6 is a first-person shooter with a single-player campaign, multiplayer, and cooperative Zombies mode. A key new feature is omnidirectional movement, allowing players to sprint, dive, and slide in any direction. The game also has "Intelligent Movement" settings that can automate actions like sprinting and mantling. Players can choose from different HUD presets, including a "Legacy" preset for Zombies that mimics the HUD from Call of Duty: Black Ops III from 2015.

The single-player campaign offers multiple ways to tackle missions and includes dialogue trees for interacting with NPCs. Between missions, players can visit a safe house to plan using an evidence board and talk to NPCs. Players can find cash during missions to buy "Operator Perks" that improve weapons and equipment. In most missions, you play as rogue CIA operative William "Case" Calderon, but some missions let you control other characters. Completing campaign missions unlocks cosmetic items like weapon blueprints, player skins, stickers, and weapon charms for use in multiplayer and Zombies.

The multiplayer mode launched with sixteen new maps: twelve for core six-versus-six modes and four "Strike" maps for both six-versus-six and two-versus-two modes. It brings back the classic "Prestige" leveling system, where players can reset their max level up to ten times, and "Theater" mode, which lets players on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S rewatch matches from any player’s perspective.

In Zombies mode, one to four players face endless waves of undead that get tougher each round, across six maps: Liberty Falls, Terminus, Citadels des Mort's, The Tomb, Shattered Veil, and Reckoning. Each map has a main quest players must figure out, plus side quests and easter eggs. Post-launch, two new modes were added: "Directed," which helps players complete main quests with in-game guidance, and "Grief," where two teams of four compete to survive while sabotaging each other with depuffs. Zombies has two main currencies: Essence, used to unlock map areas, buy Perk-a-Cola cans, and upgrade weapons at the Pack-a-Punch machine; and Salvage, used for ammo mods and crafting equipment. Players can also use Gobble Gums, single-use items that give special effects, and unlock Augments, which are minor and major upgrades for perks, field upgrades, and ammo mods. Each perk, field upgrade, and ammo mod can have up to three minor and major Augments, with one of each equip able, letting players customize their play style.
