Elden Ring is a 2022 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, with worldbuilding by American fantasy writer George R. R. Martin. The game launched on February 25, 2022, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is planned for 2025. Set in the Lands Between, players control a customizable character on a quest to repair the Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord.

Elden Ring is played from a third-person perspective, with players freely exploring its open world. The six main areas can be traversed using the player’s steed, Torrent. Hidden dungeons, like catacombs and caves, can be explored for useful items. Players can wield various weapons and magic spells, with stealth mechanics allowing non-direct combat. Checkpoints, called sites of grace, enable fast travel and let players upgrade attributes using runes, an in-game currency. The game includes an online multiplayer mode for cooperative boss fights or player-versus-player combat.

FromSoftware aimed to create an open-world game inspired by Dark Souls. Miyazaki, a fan of Martin’s work, hoped his contributions would make the narrative more accessible than FromSoftware’s earlier titles. Martin had full freedom to craft the backstory, while Miyazaki wrote the in-game narrative. The story is conveyed through flavor text, dialogue, visuals, and player interpretation. The developers focused on environmental scale, stat management, and storytelling, building numerous structures to enhance the world’s vastness.

Elden Ring won multiple Game of the Year awards and is considered one of the greatest games ever, praised for its open world, gameplay, and setting. It sold over 30 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games of all time. The downloadable content, Shadow of the Erdtree, set in the Land of Shadow, was released in June 2024 to similar acclaim and sold over five million copies. A multiplayer-focused spinoff, Elden Ring Nightreign, came out in 2025.

Gameplay

Elden Ring is an action role-playing game with a third-person perspective, featuring elements similar to FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It’s set in an open world called the Lands Between, with six main areas like Limgrave, a region of grassy plains and ancient ruins, and Caelid, a reddish wasteland filled with undead monsters. Players explore using Torrent, their mount, as the primary mode of transportation, though fast travel is available outside combat. The game includes hidden dungeons, catacombs, tunnels, and caves where players can fight bosses and collect valuable items.

At the start, players choose a character class that determines their initial spells, equipment, and attributes. Combat can be melee or ranged, with enemy attacks dodged or blocked using shields. Spells enhance weapons, attack enemies from a distance, or restore health, and are cast using a staff or sacred seal, with a limit on memorized spells. Weapons can be upgraded with ashes of war, enchantments that add new abilities or weapon arts for use in combat. Stealth mechanics allow players to avoid enemies or land critical hits while hidden. Staggering enemies or parrying their attacks also opens opportunities for critical hits.

Sites of grace, checkpoints scattered across the world, let players boost attributes, change spells, swap ashes of war, or fast travel. Upon death, players respawn at the last site of grace visited, or at nearby “stakes of Marika” if they died close by. Runes, earned by defeating enemies, are spent at sites of grace to improve attributes, buy items, or upgrade weapons and armor. Dying causes players to lose all runes at the death location; if they die again before retrieving them, the runes are gone for good.

The game includes crafting, requiring materials and recipes found in cookbooks scattered across the world. Materials come from defeating enemies, exploring, or trading with merchant NPCs. Crafted items include poison darts, exploding pots, and consumables that temporarily boost combat strength. Like Dark Souls, players can summon friendly NPC spirits to fight enemies using Spirit Ashes, found while exploring. Spirits can only be summoned near Rebirth Monuments, located in large areas or boss arenas.

Elden Ring’s multiplayer system allows online cooperative or player-versus-player play. In co-op, players place a summon sign on the ground, visible to others who use a specific item. Interacting with the sign summons the player into another’s world, where they stay until the area’s boss is defeated or a summoned player dies. For PvP, players use summon signs to challenge others to duels or invade other worlds with specific items. World hosts can use a “taunter’s tongue” to increase invasion likelihood and reduce time between invasions.
